Frequently Asked Questions

About teledermatology

Can a dermatologist evaluate a skin condition online?

Yes, many patients can begin with an online evaluation using photos and symptom history. Some cases may require lab work or an in-person examination. If so, DirectDerm will facilitate an in-person examination.

Do I need a diagnosis to start a consultation?

No. DirectDerm’s dermatologists can evaluate your skin and provide a diagnosis if one hasn’t been confirmed yet. If you’ve already been diagnosed and want a second opinion or treatment review, please indicate that while submitting your case.

What photos should I upload?

Upload clear images when you are experiencing symptoms. Include both close-up and wider views.

Will my insurance cover a DirectDerm consultation?

DirectDerm accepts most major commercial insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid, and HSA/FSA accounts. Coverage for specific conditions varies by plan. Always confirm current insurance availability directly with DirectDerm.

What if I don’t have insurance?

If you don’t have insurance or we don’t accept your insurance plan, we offer a discounted rate of $120 per consultation with our board-certified dermatologists. DirectDerm accepts major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover).

Can I pay for the service with my health savings account (HSA)?

Yes, this service is a qualified medical expense for HSA accounts. We provide a receipt that you can keep for your records.

What happens after I submit my photos and history?

A board-certified dermatologist reviews your submission and responds with a written diagnosis and personalized treatment plan within 24-48 hours. If appropriate, a prescription will be sent to your pharmacy of choice.

What if telehealth isn’t appropriate for my case?

Your DirectDerm provider will let you know if in-person evaluation or referral to another specialist is more appropriate for your situation. The goal is always the right care, not just the most convenient option.
