Joshua Schulman, MD
MD: Harvard Medical School
RESIDENCY (Dermatology): University of California, San Francisco
BOARD-CERTIFIED: The American Board of Dermatology
Dr. Schulman is a practicing dermatologist and an educator who has been recognized for his expertise in training dermatology residents. He particularly enjoys teaching young physicians, noting that they ask “fantastic questions” that encourage him to dig deeper into the medical literature to find answers to new or very rare situations.
“Teaching residents keeps information about skin disease fresh and at a higher level so I can articulate observations and recommendations logically to students,” he says.
Certified by the American Board of Dermatology, he has specialized training in dermatopathology – the study and analysis of skin diseases at microscopic and molecular levels. In this capacity, he works extensively with primary care physicians through the DirectDerm portal, consulting on complex cases and helping to identify and treat serious skin conditions that might otherwise go undetected.
He sees teledermatology as an important means of making highly specialized skin care available to many patients who would otherwise have to wait weeks or months for an appointment – or who might not get one at all.
“What DirectDerm is all about is providing care for patients who otherwise wouldn’t have access to it,” he says. “These are people who need someone to help them, and my goal is to provide care for them in the same way that I would want to receive it myself.”
